In 1954, Alfa Romeo debuted the Giulietta in “Sprint” (coupe) form at the Turin Auto Show. Designed by Scaglione at Bertone, it heralded a new direction for Alfa Romeo in small and agile cars. At the behest of Max Hoffman, Alfa released a convertible version of the Giulietta, the Spider, in 1955. Weighing less than the Giulietta Coupe, its movie-star looks as well as its faster acceleration and top speed ensured that the Giulietta Spider was a great success for Alfa, and remains an extremely desirable European classic in the modern day.

This Giulietta Spider is a “101-series” Alfa Spiders, produced in 1961, making it very desirable for rallies and other events where later cars may not be eligible. It retains its original 1.3 liter “Normale” engine with the correct single Solex carburetor, and the included “Certificato Di Origine” and certification letter from Alfa Romeo confirms its production date and original Rosso exterior color, which it still wears today. A 5-speed Alfa transmission was added at some point in the car’s past, which is quite welcome in a car that will actually be driven on today’s roads.

In the last couple of years, this Giulietta Spider was treated to a comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration, and the results speak for themselves. The body is extremely straight, shutlines and gaps are consistent, the paint shines beautifully, and the underside is extremely clean. Similarly, the interior was refurbished as well, with new seats and carpeting, but care was taken to preserve original elements such as badging, gauges, and some trim. Michael Keith at Vintage Car Services in Houston, TX, a noted Alfa Romeo expert, sorted the few remaining issues found after the restoration, including installation of a new driveshaft flex disc and center support, as well as new tires.

As a result, this Giulietta Spider not only looks amazing, but also drives wonderfully as well. With the working choke pulled out, the car starts immediately, and has that characteristic Alfa Romeo burble to the exhaust. Acceleration is brisk, given the light weight of the car, and the steering is light and precise, while the brakes stop the car without drama. The overall effect is of a vintage car that can be enjoyed on public roads, and one that is certainly ready for a classic road rally or other long distance trip.
